Amidst tectonic plates, polar shifts, and diminish of land mass here on Earth, they are (too) the key result of galactic events i.e.: solar system's passage through immense, "snakelike" clouds of exploding stars in the Milky Way galaxy...
-Astrophysical Journal maps this "certainly obvious" conclusion...
NOTE: Many amazing Scientific developments and research have brought about millions of years of Archeological and astronomical tests, so we must consider these galactic events : Are Earth ice ages created by stars?
