Sen DeMint (R-S.C.) offers amendment to Stop WH grabs of State land; Dems strike it down

-Posted by D.C. Worth, for Barbay (France & US)

"Americans should be wary of any plans a president has to seize land from the states without their consent. Any new plans to take away states’ freedom to use land as they see fit must be stopped." -Sen DeMint. -Read: More.

From Ed Morrissey:
DeMint demands a block to Obama land-grab attempt: ##
"DeMint correctly asserts that this is not only a perversion of the intent of the Antiquities Act, but also a huge power grab by the federal government at the expense of the states." Read.

DeMint’s amendment was defeated by a Dem party-line vote...

The 21-page document marked "Internal Draft-NOT FOR RELEASE," names 14 different lands Mr. Obama could completely close for development by unilaterally designating them as "monuments" under 1906 Antiquities Act.

Memo reveals...
The federal government's plan to seize more than 10 million acres from Montana to New Mexico, halting job- creating activities like ranching, forestry, mining and energy development. Worse, this land grab would dry up tax revenue that's essential for funding schools, firehouses and community centers... (washingtontimes)

Ed also remarks that these executive actions bypassed Congress altogether and made a mockery of state sovereignty... After all, if a state can’t keep the federal government from unilaterally declaring that their land no longer belongs to them, then states have no real power at all — and neither do the people, represented by Congress.
