Breaking the Loop: Op-EF

Meet the Fighters from Kabul: Circia: 1988-
(After withdrawal of Russia)

[© | Digimarc-06; 88']
~Take a good closer look at the guys...click-here
History has recorded Mikhail Gorbachev's withdrawal of troops (from Soviet occupied Afghanistan) as: "Due to social pressure i.e.: costs, deaths of 15,000 Soviet soldiers...In what they called:
"an unwinnable war"...
_________
So Russia was "freed up" with their (1988) peace accords, anti-war fractions "rejoiced"...and by 1989, Russia not only withdrew from Afghanistan, but began a withdraw from Global Competition...
~So everything was just fine, then... right?
It also marked Saddam's use of mass chemical Warfare, to prevent the Kurd (and Iran) successes with newly secured Northern territory. Saddam ordered Iraqi planes to drop chemical weapons mercilessly upon Halabja, and near-by villages...
~For the skeptics: Saddam's "signed" proof is circulating at the Pentagon for public release...soon...
__________
~So what matter was Iraq's chemical warfare, we were after Bin Laden?
~Just a little something he'd have given thousands of our Int'l troops, during the oust of the Taliban; 2002.
_________
Let's step back, and view what happened when Russia left Afghanistan (1989)
~Peace in Afghanistan was short-lived as the rebel's victory exposed deep divisions within the Mujahideen. Millions of Afghans were dead or displaced;
Soon a refugee crisis, of more than 1 million, fled into Iran and Pakistan. Civil war quickly started again, and the country rapidly plunged into violent anarchy.
It was at this time (94-96) which brought forth the birth and rise of of the Taliban's brutal militia (Pashtun Islamic fundamentalists.)
Also: Bin Ladin’s training camps, the bombing of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania (98) desecration of Buddhist monuments, and finally the mastermind efforts which tragically took lives...(9-11; 2001) on US soil...

~In the early years, UN-brokered peace, banned arms sales to Taliban forces, U.S. issued threats, with random attacks... This did not advert, nor address. What was looming in the background was a greater threat than man's eyes could see... None-the-less, this was a chapter at which is written into history, and cannot be changed...
___________
As President Bush visits Kabul this week, it is entirely evident that Afghanistan and Iraq will always require 'stabilization' and the World's watchful eye. But curiously enough, the one equation that was never accurately figured by the opposition... Afghans, and Iraqis want Peace and a decent shot at life, for their children..

And by all determination, and friends...They WILL =(click)

Totalitarian Global Threat

re- Manifesto:
I've just returned from my trip. I can't believe how much respect I have for these 12 (below) ...I'll proudly stand beside them.~MB
_________

Together facing the new totalitarianism

After having overcome fascism, Nazism, and Stalinism, the world now faces a new totalitarian global threat: Islamism.
We: Writers, journalists, intellectuals, call for resistance to religious totalitarianism and for the promotion of freedom, equal opportunity and secular values for all.

The recent events, which occurred after the publication of drawings of Muhammed in European newspapers, have revealed the necessity of the struggle for these universal values. This struggle will not be won by arms, but in the ideological field. It is not a clash of civilisations nor an antagonism of West and East that we are witnessing, but a global struggle that confronts democrats and theocrats.

Like all totalitarianisms, Islamism is nurtured by fears and frustrations. The hate preachers bet on these feelings in order to form battalions destined to impose a liberticidal and unegalitarian world. But we clearly and firmly state: nothing, not even despair, justifies the choice of obscurantism, totalitarianism and hatred. Islamism is a reactionary ideology which kills equality, freedom and secularism wherever it is present. Its success can only lead to a world of domination: man’s domination of woman, the Islamists’ domination of all the others. To counter this, we must assure universal rights to oppressed or discriminated people.

We reject « cultural relativism », which consists in accepting that men and women of Muslim culture should be deprived of the right to equality, freedom and secular values in the name of respect for cultures and traditions. We refuse to renounce our critical spirit out of fear of being accused of "Islamophobia", an unfortunate concept which confuses criticism of Islam as a religion with stigmatisation of its believers.

We plead for the universality of freedom of expression, so that a critical spirit may be exercised on all continents, against all abuses and all dogmas.
We appeal to democrats and free spirits of all countries that our century should be one of Enlightenment, not of obscurantism.

Bush, Fox, Harper Summit Set for End of March
via:Reuters
Tuesday, February 28, 2006

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Immigration, trade disputes and concern about the rise in China's economic power will top the agenda at a summit next month between U.S. President George W. Bush, Mexican President Vicente Fox and new Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Mexico's foreign ministry said on Monday the summit will be held March 30-31 in the Caribbean resort town of Cancun, and will cap a series of meetings between U.S. and Mexican officials on border security and other issues.

Many issues on the table are the same as at last year's meeting between Bush, Fox and Harper's predecessor Paul Martin: Mexico's desire for immigration reform in the United States, trade disputes between the United States and Canada, and concerns among all three governments about the rising economic clout of China and India.

Geronimo Gutierrez, a deputy secretary for North America in the foreign ministry, told local radio Bush and Fox are expected to talk separately as well.

Security along the U.S. Mexico border has been a source of tension between the two governments and would also likely be on the agenda of a bilateral meeting.

Border violence has spiraled on the border and elsewhere since Fox declared war on drug cartels a year ago.

20th Winter Olympics -Finale

[AP-Winter-06; Closing Ceremonies]

It was Sweden's best medal total ever for the Winter Games. Its final gold came Sunday as the men's hockey team beat Finland 3-2. The Swedish women's hockey team also pulled the upset of the Olympics, defeating the Americans in the semifinals and going on to take the silver behind Canada.

A tiny touch on the Bazaar-side (but fun) marked the conclusion of the 20th Winter 2006 Olympics...
As: DAVID CRARY AP describes:

"Turin's Olympics, a topsy-turvy mix of marvels and misadventures, ended appropriately with a closing-ceremony Carnival -- a circus-like celebration full of clowns and acrobats, vibrant and often dreamlike. Fireworks, confetti and pulsating ballads filled the air. At one point, a winged snowboarder hovered high above ground, as if by magic.

Some athletes wore red clown noses Sunday night as they swarmed across the huge stage of Olympic Stadium, waving jubilantly to a backdrop of bouncy Italian songs. Many of the 35,000 spectators donned devil and angel masks in a closing ceremony doubling as the annual Carnival festival celebrated across Italy this weekend."

The more I've come to understand the dynamics here, I realize that it is as if a majority of the Middle Eastern cities are now living within the same circumstances as we did, in our "1920's, 30's, and 40's." It's as if they remain (as is true with many other parts of the World) left behind during evolution of modern lawfulness. We need to understand this, and give them much patience...

For instance: Take a look at America during the (1949) upsurge of Gangsterism. There had been many decades of bullet sprays from drive-by gangsters, of which most carried automatic weapons and the like...
[Enlarge: click-here]
The 'killing for killing' was ruthless; as were the wars between mob families. In fact, those who survived a shooting, often needed bodyguards at the hospital, or later in the courtroom.

The Gangs in the streets with free-reign, took advantage of the weak and the ineffectuality of enforcements.

It took decades to shift from the many phases of lawlessness, but not until the gangs joined society as State's Witnesses, did they finally gain control.
Outside insurgence (such as that which currently befalls Iraq) became a pivotal factor in shifting this dynamic. Gangs along with civilians grew tired of being frightened...
UPDATE: Sunnis and Sadr's Shiites make peace!
This is great!! I certainly hope this is true, and lasting!
It will be, only because they make this shift themselves... (^__^)

Serves 4 to 6
~1- 1/2 cups (plain, unbleached) flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
~10 tablespoons sweet butter
~4-5 tablespoons ice water little water
~2 egg yolks
~2 tablespoons unsalted butter
~1 lb leeks, including tender green parts, well cleaned and sliced crosswise 1/8 inch thick
~Close-up of a Leek.
~Salt and freshly ground pepper
~2 whole eggs, plus
~1 egg yolk
~1 cup (8 fl oz) heavy (double cream or half-and-half (half cream)
~pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
~1/3 cup shredded Danbo (the least fat)
~1/3 cup shredded Danish Tilsit
~1/3 cup sliced Estrom (also known as Danish Port Salut)
~3 Tablespoons Chopped Fresh Chives
~1/4 Lb Danish Crumbly Blue Cheese
Tart pastry:
~You can also see my tart pastry recipe: here
Prepare the deep pastry crust (as I did with berry tart)
Quick tips:
~Tip 1: You also want to do a blind baking (partially cook) the shell.
~Tip 2: Let cool on rack after crust sets and colors slightly...
How to:
~Mix the flour in a bowl. Then rub in the butter until it resembles bread crumbs. Add just enough water to bind the mixture (about 1 to 2 teaspoons). Form a ball, flatten into a disk, Wrap the pastry in plastic, refrigerate...
(Keep going!) ;)
Roll out the pastry on a floured surface and use to line eight 4-inch false-bottomed tart pans. Trim the edges, then chill for 30 min... Line the pastry with foil (or parchment paper and fill with ceramic baking beans... (Increase the amount of ceramic cooking beans) ...Cook in a pre-heated oven at 400 degrees F for 10 to 15 min. until lightly browned at the edges. Remove from the oven and remove the parchment paper and baking beans.

Now, on to the recipe!
In a large heavy frying pan, melt the butter over medium-low heat. When it foams, add the leeks, reduce the heat to low, and cook slowly until the leeks are soft and golden, about 15 min. Season with salt and pepper and set aside to cool.

Position a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place a baking sheet on the rack below to catch any drips.

In a bowl whisk together the whole eggs, egg yolk, and cream until blended. Season with the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.

Sprinkle half of the shredded cheeses evenly over the bottom of the pastry crust. Top with the leeks, then the chives, and finally the Danish Crumbly Blue. Pour in as much of the egg mixture as will fit, stopping within 1/2 inch of the rim. Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheese evenly over the top.

Bake the tart until the top is lightly puffed and golden and the filling giggles only slightly when the pan is gently shaken, about 25 min. Remove the tart from the oven and let rest for at least 10 min. If using a tart pan with a removable bottom, place the pan on the outstretched palm and let ring fall away, then slide the tart onto a serving plate...
Tip 1: Serve hot or at room temperature.
Tip 2: Serve with Danish Carlberg (or) Tuborg Beers!

Prayer Bill Piques ACLU

[Rockwell: 1977 Pres. Medal of Freedom]
~View enlargement: Click-here

by Bob on 02-23-06 @ 2:15 pm
In response to a November ruling by a U.S. District Judge, Representative Mike Sodrel, a Republican, has introduced legislation to prevent federal courts from ruling on the content of speech in legislatures:

Judge David Hamilton (appointed by Bill Clinton) had ruled that any prayer that refers to Jesus Christ, Savior, or Son of God is unconstitutional. Any such reference, he said, "amounts in practical terms to an official endorsement of the Christian religion."

~Sodrel and Representative Dan Burton called Hamilton’s ruling "a clear example of judicial activism."

Sodrel said his bill would provide immunity for content of speech for lawmakers or their guests during a legislative session, excluding witnesses and excluding speech that constitutes treason, an admission of a crime or a breach of the peace. The bill would also prohibit the use of federal funds to enforce a decision like Hamilton’s.

~Well, guess who’s up in arms about using legislation to rein in activist judges’ decisions? Survey says, the ACLU of Indiana. Calling it a political ploy, as if they never engage in such activity, the ACLU is feigning horror at the very questioning of the validity of the American justice system. If any one organization is responsible for America’s loss of faith in the judicial system, it is the ACLU.

~Ken Falk, the ACLU of Indiana’s legal director, has been recognized by the ICLU as leading a legal team that accepts one of the most ambitious dockets of any ACLU affiliate in the country. That, of course, means he and his cronies are litigation happy, a trait that most people would find less than admirable. Falk has history, indeed, from suing to remove a monument of the Judeo-Christian Decalogue in front of the Elkhart, Indiana municipal building to convincing the Supreme Court to strike down Indianapolis’ drug interdiction roadblocks.

"If you disagree with a court decision, you appeal the case," Falk said.
The ACLU wants to keep everything in courts that are peppered with their friends, colleagues and former members. Thus, they can continue to pervert the will of the American people. They fear the legislature because on most votes they will lose. And, when they lose, the majority of Americans win and the tyranny of the minority loses.

"If the political alignment in the country were otherwise, impeachment would be a no-brainer," said Laurence H. Tribe, professor of constitutional law at Harvard University. Read more.

"The terrorist surveillance program helps us to connect the dots and save lives and prevent attacks," said McClellan.

"I think most leaders understand that this is not only a necessary tool, but a vital tool in our efforts to disrupt plots and prevent attacks here at home. From jay:

"I found this new tape of Bin Laden to be quite interesting. Earlier this weekend, at the bookstore, I was skimming through some books. One was about an individual that followed Osama Bin Laden with a pistol, who’s job was to kill him if he were to ever be surrounded. According to what I read, Osama vowed that “martyrdom over capture” was to be preferred. Didn’t buy the book, but when I heard this it made me think of it."
~~~~~~~~~~~
Osama bin Laden promised never to be captured alive and declared the U.S. had resorted to the same "repressive" tactics used by Saddam Hussein, according to an audiotape purportedly by the al-Qaida leader that was posted Monday on a militant Web site.
The tape appeared to be a complete version of one that was first broadcast Jan. 19 on Al-Jazeera, the pan-Arab satellite channel, in which bin Laden offered the United States a long-term truce but also said his al-Qaida terror network would soon launch a fresh attack on American soil.
"I have sworn to only live free. Even if I find bitter the taste of death, I don't want to die humiliated or deceived," bin Laden said.
In drawing the comparison to American military behavior in Iraq to that of Saddam, the speaker said:
"The jihad is continuing with strength, for Allah be all the credit, despite all the barbarity, the repressive steps taken by the American Army and its agents, to the extent that there is no longer any mentionable difference between this criminality and the criminality of Saddam."..Story at Stop the ACLU. Secure Our Borders Op-3-06
MINUTEMAN CIVIL DEFENSE CORPS
ANNOUNCES NATIONWIDE ‘SECURE OUR BORDERS’ OPERATION FOR APRIL 2006
(PHOENIX, AZ) February 16, 2006 – Chris Simcox, President of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps (“MCDC”), today announced plans for the group’s nationwide “Secure Our Borders” campaign in April 2006. Simcox also announced a new operational structure for the original Minuteman Border Project to meet the growing needs of the continued expansion of Minuteman border security operations.
Thousands of MCDC volunteers, augmented by the new national support team, will hold border watch patrols in northern and southern states along an estimated 800 miles of international borders during the month of April. The Minutemen will observe and report suspected illegal border crossings to the proper authorities. As always, they will maintain a “no contact” policy with the exception of providing emergency water to those illegal aliens found in distress in the wilderness.
Last year, MCDC revolutionized the national debate about border security and illegal immigration by focusing the nation’s attention on the dangers of America’s wide-open borders in a post 9/11 world. The Minutemen have demonstrated that the borders can be secured with sufficient political will and dedication.
Since the MCDC 23-mile border watch in April, 2005, interest in joining and supporting the Minutemen has exploded nationwide. MCDC chapters have been formed in southern and northern border states, as well as interior states. To date, 6,500 men and women have passed the required background check and interviews to qualify to become official Minuteman Border Project volunteers – with more waiting in the queue for approval. Over 120,000 people have become friends of the Minutemen through their support and volunteer work.
Given the success of the Minuteman Border Project efforts, and two successful month long 24/7 operations conducted in April and October of 2005, a new national volunteer operational structure has been launched to support the Minutemen. The new structure is necessary to respond to these thousands of volunteers and supporters asking what they can do to help.
MCDC has asked for and accepted the help of experienced border volunteers who have been on the front lines, some for as long as four years. With this expansion we will be ready for the thousands of volunteers who will participate in the “Secure Our Borders” operation in April 2006. This expansion further solidifies MCDC’s ability to continue the largest neighborhood watch effort in American history. The Minutemen will continue their civil defense operations assisting authorities in securing the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada until properly relieved.
Baldwin Eyes Fey's NBC Pilot
LOS ANGELES | Fri Feb 17, 2006 - Alec Baldwin is in final negotiations to star opposite Tina Fey in Fey's untitled comedy pilot for NBC.
The show is set behind the scenes at a "Saturday Night Live"-type show, familiar territory for Baldwin, who has become a fixture on "SNL," on which Fey stars and is a head writer.
He has hosted the late-night sketch comedy show a number of times, most recently in December, and also made an appearance this month.
If the pilot goes to series, it will be Baldwin's first major series gig since his 1984-85 stint on CBS' primetime soap "Knots Landing."
